Robert Kelly Thomas, otherwise known as Rob Thomas, is the lead singer and songwriter for the pop rock band, Matchbox Twenty. The band originally went by the name Matchbox 20 but eventually changed it to Matchbox Twenty over the years. Their debut album was released in 1996 with top 40 hit songs soon following the debut. The band has had various successes from smash hit singles to smash hit albums. Fans all over the world, from the US to Australia have demanded more of Matchbox Twenty, and the band has delivered with strong albums, time and time again, selling over 45 million of them.
Several of Matchbox Twenty’s singles have been nominated for Grammy’s, including “Push” and “Unwell”, neither of which won. In 2004, they received a People’s choice award for Favorite Musical Group. Other hit singles include “Real World”, “Three A.M.”, “If You’re Gone”, and “Bent”. The band went on a temporary hiatus in 2005 to 2007 until they released their 2007 album titled “Exit on Mainstream” which also included a tour. Although the group has fared well as a musical sensation, Rob Thomas has proved himself an excellent solo singer himself.
The new Rob Thomas CD is looking promising as his past solo artist compilations have been quite successful. In 1999, he worked with Santana on their Supernatural CD to co-write three of their songs. He is featured as the singer in the single Smooth on the CD that also received a Grammy nomination. Since then he has worked on other solo projects, including writing and singing on the Meet the Robinson’s soundtrack. His latest work includes a collaboration with Miley Cyrus and another with Weezer. His debut album as a solo artist was released in 2005, labeled …Something to Be. His latest album, Cradlesong, was released in 2009.
